We are less than one month away from college football starting, well kind of. No one really knows why week 0 is a thing, but we all greatly appreciate the appetizer a week early. 2024 week 0 has a total of four games with spreads currently posted via Fanduel, let’s take a look at them.
Delaware State @ Hawaii (-28.5)
Now look, I get it, this is nothing special.. BUT it is freaking football and we have been waiting on this for what feels like years. Hawaii winning a football game by four touchdowns is a crazy thought to have considering they have not won a game by 28+ since 2019, at Nevada. On the flip side of that, Delaware State was 1-10 last year, losing 4 of those 10 by more than 28. One thing you will learn with these gambling blogs is that I will never pretend like I know a team that I don’t. With that being said, I think a lot of points are going to be scored. PICK: OVER 51.5
Georgia Tech vs Florida State (-12.5)
Next up we have the headliner of week 0, which is being played in Dublin. The Seminoles were not happy at the end of the year after getting snubbed a playoff spot due to QB Jordan Travis suffering an injury. Mike Norvell is going to have these guys fired up and seeking revenge, but they will have to do it without Jordan Travis, star wideout Keon Coleman, and a whopping 14 total starters (7 offense, 7 defense). DJ Uiagalelei is now in Tallahassee after an 8-4 year at Oregon State. Georgia Tech still has Haynes King in the pocket, who led the Yellowjackets to a 6-6 year. Georgia Tech was pretty competitive in every game last year, the main issue was the turnovers (21 total TOs). Despite a good bit of defensive additions for Georgia Tech, I think Florida Stage gets this one done, but not by much more than the number. PICK: Florida State (-12.5)
Montana State @ New Mexico (+7.5)
Back to the weeds we go with a three o’clock matchup. Casuals might be shocked by this line, but Montana State has been a very respectable FCS team recently (32-9 last 3 years). Bronco Mendenhall is the new coach for New Mexico, who has been bowl eligible 16 of his 17 years coaching. This game is a must win if they are going to find their way to a bowl game. Mendenhall will have these guys fired up and if the OLine can get some push then New Mexico will lean on them and pound the rock on the ground. PICK: New Mexico (+7.5)
SMU @ Nevada (+24.5)
We are wrapping up week 0 with a little seven o’clock kickoff in Nevada. SMU was 10-2 last year, and defeated Tulane in the American Championship. Preston Stone is also back for SMU, he threw for over 3000 yards, 28 TDs, and just 6 interceptions. Despite Nevada gaining 24 players via portal I’m not sure if it will be enough to completely turn around a 2-10 2023 season. If anything it seems the offense may have taken a step forward, but the defense will be just as bad if not a little worse. I think it will be a night full of touchdowns. PICK: OVER 56.5
