2014 UConn was Historically, & This is Why.

Written on January 23, 2023 by Dalton Cohea

So, I got a little obsessed with college hoops this afternoon and decided why not blog it?

8 out of the last 10 winners of March Madness have been a #1 Seed.

12 out of the last 15 winners have been a #1 Seed.

Since 1998, only 1 team has won it while being lower than a #3 Seed. That would be the #7 Seed in 2014, UConn.

UConn played Louisville for the ACC championship and fell short, losing 71-61. Despite losing the conference championship, Coach Kevin Ollie did not let it discourage the Huskies.

After the conference tournament, the Huskies were 26-8 and were a #7 Seed matched up with a #10 Seed St. Joseph's.

It took overtime, but the first rounder Shabazz Napier pushed UConn past St. Joes, 89-81.

In the 2nd round, the Huskies had a very tough matchup. #2 Seed Villanova finished 29-5 after UConn sent them home.

After knocking off a #2 Seed, UConn went on to send home a #3, #4, and even a #1 Seed.

Sweet Sixteen - #3 Iowa State

Elite Eight - #4 Michigan State

Final Four - #1 Florida

Now, the championship in 2014 was very interesting. #7 Seed UConn had found themselves facing #8 Seed Kentucky.

UConn won the game 60-54, and some would say they got lucky to face a #8 Seed, but that 2014 magical #7 Seed UConn is what dreams are made of.

In the last 35 years, UConn is the lowest Seed to win the whole thing, and that folks is why we love March Madness.
